Animation Production

Animation pipeline tooling splits into three tiers, no single winner. Task/asset tracking: Toon Boom Producer (Toon Boom Animation, Montreal), now v26, subscription-based per seat with pricing not publicly itemized by tier (a reseller lists a flat ~$20/seat/month annual plan; larger teams get custom quotes above 10 seats), integrates natively with Harmony/Storyboard Pro; Autodesk Flow Production Tracking (renamed from ShotGrid March 26, 2024), $50/user/month or $390/user/year annual, integrates with Maya, Nuke, Houdini, Unreal. Review-and-approval, both owned by Backlight (acquired ftrack 2021): ftrack Studio $25/user/month annual ($30 monthly, 250GB storage included), Review-only tier $10/user/month annual ($15 monthly); cineSync, Academy Sci-Tech Award winner, Essential $19/user/month annual ($39 monthly), Pro $50 annual ($99 monthly) adds color-grading/LUT/HDR. Cloud storage: LucidLink Filespaces, Starter $7/mo for up to 10 seats/100GB each, Business $32/mo for 400GB/seat (up to 25 seats), metered usage. Pricing: Category spans $7/mo (LucidLink Starter, 10 seats/100GB) to $99/user/mo (cineSync Pro monthly); production trackers cluster $25-50/user/mo (ftrack Studio $25 annual, Autodesk Flow $50); Toon Boom Producer's per-tier pricing is not publicly itemized (a reseller lists a flat ~$20/seat/month annual plan; custom quotes above 10 seats). 🧊Why learn Animation Production?

Pick Autodesk Flow Production Tracking (ex-ShotGrid) if you're Maya/Nuke/Houdini-based and need deep custom scripting -- it's the default at big VFX-adjacent studios. Skip it for a 5-person 2D shop: ftrack Studio at $25/seat undercuts it by half and, per ftrack's own pitch, needs "less configuration to deploy effectively" -- a direct dig at ShotGrid's admin overhead. Toon Boom Producer only earns its per-seat cost if you're already on Harmony/Storyboard Pro; bolting it onto a non-Toon-Boom pipeline is pointless. For review, cineSync's frame-accurate sync beats generic tools on heavy VFX shots, but its Pro tier at $50-99/seat is a line item most indie studios can't justify -- LucidLink's $7 Starter solves storage, not review. Known weakness: ftrack markets directly against ShotGrid/Flow's configuration overhead as a selling point, and per-seat costs across trackers plus review plus storage stack fast once a team crosses ~20 seats, pushing total tooling spend well past any single vendor's advertised price.
